I held my first “open house” a couple of weeks ago, where I worked from the council chambers and invited residents to come ask questions, voice concerns, and air grievances. I had a great time, and I was encouraged by the many residents who took time out of their day to come share their thoughts with me. My plan is to continue this practice as often as possible. I will take this a step further and visit neighborhoods this summer. I hope this will be a better option for people at home with kids who can’t make it over to City Hall. I plan to create an online sign up form for those who may be interested. I’ll keep you posted.
As I’ve discussed previously, Pony Express Days has undergone some changes this year . Here is a link if you would like to see the schedule of events that will be offered. Some events that you are used to seeing are not on the schedule- the rodeo, demolition derby and concert being the largest. I know that many of you have enjoyed those events over the years. I have as well. I want to make sure that each of you know why we have made these changes. The Pony Express Days celebration cost the tax payers approximately $129,000 last year. The three largest events represent a majority of the expenses. While I enjoy our celebration very much, I can’t support spending at this level given the other needs we have.
My desire is to return our celebration to a sustainable level that serves our community as the primary audience. One way that we will do this is to have our celebration from Tuesday, June 3rd through Saturday, June 7th. This will allow more families to participate with their children after the school year has concluded. We are also taking some of the events that didn’t fit in to the abbreviated schedule, and offering them throughout the summer and early fall months. As an example, we would hold the “movie in the park” several times this year in different locations throughout the city.
As our city grows and as we establish a track record of successfully executing events at a modest cost, we may add to the event line-up. In the mean time, I hope that you will each enjoy the events with your families, and I look forward to seeing you there!
